Endurant PR: Perennial Rye Grass Colorant

Endurant has a full line of turfgrass colorants to match the most popular turfgrass species. Endurant PR is perennial rye grass colorant to provide the color of the vibrant and popular bright green of perennial rye.

Endurant PR Twitter Kevin Smith
Wow! That’s Endurant PR giving golf course superintendent Kevin Smith a rich perennial rye look. Due to completely dormant existing turf, Smith chose to apply at a higher than average rate. Endurant PR is often applied to fairways at rates between 6 and 10 gallons per acre. Endurant PR is recommended to be applied on greens at rates of 2 to 5 gallons per acre.

Choosing the application rate is as important as choosing the shade of green. So once you know it’s perennial rye grass colorant that you desire, now you need to select the best application rate. Application rates vary based on many factors including the current shade of grass, current depth of color and desired depth of color. Dormant grass that is completely brown due to drought or dormancy might do better with a higher application rate while grass that is still producing chlorophyl through photosynthesis will have more green color in the grass blade already and may require lower application rates.

Endurant PR’s recommended application rates for fairways range from 6 to 10 gallons per acre. Endurant PR is recommended to be applied on greens at rates of 2 to 5 gallons per acre. Below you see the results of a lower application rate providing a lighter green compared with the higher application rate that provides a brighter green. The colorant is the same and both are applied to dormant turf, but the resulting color depth creates a very different effect based on the application rate.

Here is a look at Endurant PR perennial rye grass colorant applied at a lower than average application rate at Legacy Hills golf course in Georgetown, TX.

Endurant PR, Perennial Rye Grass Colorant, was applied at a rate of 2 gallons per acre to give the look of lighter perennial rye grass.

Endurant TE is the colorant for providing the spring time green of healthy turf. Endurant TE is specially formulated for actively growing grass intended for use from spring transition until approaching dormancy conditions occur. TE provides the natural looking green associated with actively growing healthy turf.

Endurant TE turf enhancer for providing springtime green vibrant grass

Endurant TE is easy to use and mix with other products. TE turf colorant provides color uniformity and vibrancy. The TE colorant, like all Endurant products in the full line of colorants, can mask the discoloration from chemical treatments or other turf challenges. Best of all, TE provides a lush green appearance on a regular basis making it a popular colorant for golf course superintendents seeking to please their most discerning club members and guests.

Endurant TE is equipment friendly and tank-mix compatible with fertilizers and other chemicals.

TE is to be applied at a rate of 16 to 24 ounces per acre. Increase or decrease the application rate to reach the desired color depth. Turf conditions such as chlorophyl levels and rate of photosynthesis, equipment calibration and other conditions influencing grass depth of color cause coverage rates to vary.

Endurant turf colorants come in  multiple shades of green and multiple concentrations. The Endurant line of colorants are formulated to match the most popular varieties of turfgrass species, including bermuda grass, perennial rye grass and others. All of the Endurant blends are highly concentrated. Endurant is often referred to as “liquid overseed” by golf course superintendents who prefer Endurant over the practice of overseeding, over-watering and over-fertilizing.

How to paint turf: Select a shade of Endurant turf colorant
Endurant turf colorants are made of organic pigments that come in five shades of green to match the most popular turfgrass varieties. Left to right: Endurant TC, Endurant Premium, Endurant PR, Endurant FW, Endurant TE

Endurant TC, the original blend of turf colorant is formulated to match the widely popular species of bermuda grass. Endurant FW is an even more highly concentrated blend of organic pigments to provide the deep green associated with golf course fairways. Endurant Premium, the deepest green formulation of turf colorant, and Endurant PR, for a bright perennial rye grass, are two other options in the Endurant line. Especially unique is Endurant TE, the turf enhancer colorant that is formulated for actively growing grass.

Check out these recent photos of various Endurant FW application rates to help guide your decision in colorant and rates

Once you’ve selected Endurant FW as the shade of green you desire, you will want to select the best application rate. Learn more about how to paint for professionals here. When considering the application rate, the desired depth of color is the most important element to consider. The depth of color will be obtained by the combination of the colorant and the amount of green pigment in the grass blade if the grass is not in dormancy and is still providing green through chlorophyl and the photosynthesis process. A higher application rate might be considered for dormant turf that is lacking green color and is instead completely brown or straw-like yellow.

Check out these photos of Endurant FW applied at various rates at golf courses in Naples, Florida and West Palm Beach, Florida. Both of these clubs are located in south Florida, with Naples on the west coast of the state and West Palm Beach on the east coast of Florida. Endurant FW is highly concentrated for the deep green sought for fairways.

Pinehurst Seminar in February offers demonstrations and samples of Endurant turf colorants

USGA Green Section sponsored a workshop at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina that brought together experts in turf colorants. Several of the most experienced golf course superintendents shared how they used colorants, particularly for fairways.

In his recent blog, Carolina Greenkeeper shared his thoughts about the trip to the Pinehurst Colorant Seminar with Assistant Superintendent Ben Albrecht. Here is what he had to say (then, read the rest of his blog here):

“It was a great opportunity for us to see first hand and learn tips and techniques from guys that have been doing it better for longer (this is year two of coloring fairways at Carolina).  Anyway, I found the workshop to be very informative and hopefully you will notice improved results in future applications as we continue to strive for high standards.”  Read the rest of the GREENKEEPER blog: click here.

In true color:

Carolina greenkeeper keeps course green with Endurant

Carolina Golf Club was “biscuit brown” this January, said Matthew Wharton, CGCS (Certified Golf Course Superintendent). Carolina Golf Club is a private golf club located in Charlotte, NC. The bermudagrass quickly went into dormancy following a winter cold snap.

Wharton shared in a recent Greenkeeper blog why he chooses to use “liquid overseed,” Endurant turf colorant. Agronomics and better play topped his list this winter, although other benefits of Endurant turf colorant are noted.

In a recent blog, Wharton wrote:

The goal being to absorb some UV radiation and hopefully enhance the survival of the turf and natural green-up come spring!

Cold weather drained the color out of the bermudagrass turf, specifically temperatures in the low 20’s (Fahrenheit) in mid-January, Wharton said.

Carolina Greenkeeper winter Endurant
Carolina Golf Club gets its color back after cold winter weather using Endurant TC. The colorant will help with earlier spring green-up while providing easier playability immediately with added color contrast on the golf course.

Wharton describes the photos, which he Tweeted and shared in a recent blog he writes:

We were once again “biscuit brown,” as my good friend Tony Nysse (Golf Course Superintendent, Old Marsh Golf Club, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida) would say! Look closely at the upper left photo captioned Jan 11. Since last year’s experiment with coloring fairways was well received (seems most of you prefer some color contrast in order to provide definition of the golf hole), we initiated applications Monday of a turf paint from Geoponics (Endurant TC) to green things back up quickly.
