Preparation & best management practices for how to paint turf:

• Avoid painting when it is windy or when rain, snow or other precipitation is forecasted within 8 hours.
•  Consider applying during a morning dew or frost for great coverage. Though it is not necessary that dew or frost be present on the grass blades, it can actually help.
• Remove objects and debris from the turf to clear the surface to be painted.
• Mow, maintaining a turf height of 1-inch if possible. Lower, dense turf colors best.
• Calibrate the spray rig.
• Pump pressure should be in the range of 40-60 PSI.
• GPA rate of mix 40-55 GPA
• A dual cradle with .008 or .006 nozzles is preferable.
• A 110″ nozzle angle with 20″ spacing is adequate, but 10″ spacing will cover best if not spraying in two directions.
• Do spray in two-directions for best even coverage and to eliminate streaking if no using 10″ spacing.
• Adjust the height of the boom between 12-20″ above the turf.
• Centrifugal pumps may require an oil seal replacement from ceramic to steel (NAPA seal).

Rates and ratios: Mixing the colorant for optimal coverage

• Remember to stir the colorant prior to mixing.
• Endurant TE is commonly used at a rate ranging from 16 to 32 ounces per acre, depending on desired color depth and other considerations.
• Endurant FW and Endurant PR are commonaly applied at rates ranging from 3 to 8 gallons per acre, depending on desired depth of color, current turf color and other conditions.
• A 15:1 water to color ratio or less should be maintained.
• Recirculate or constantly stir the colorant mix if possible.

In Sacramento, one man has an idea of how to keep lawns green during the drought, and he’s selling that idea to those wanting to restore their verdant lawns; paint the grass green.

Bill Schaffer, who started his company, Brown Lawns Green, two months ago, said it started with a conversation with his girlfriend: “One night I said to my girlfriend, ‘Ya know, people are going to have to start painting their lawns green if they want green lawns this summer.’”

Shaffer told CBS Sacramento that the paint, comprised of stone pigments and oil that help it stick to the lawn, is nontoxic, and thus safe for children and pets.

He stated that it lasts roughly six weeks, adding, “In July you should be able to get about 6, to 8 weeks out of it, because you are not cutting your yard as much.” Shaffer has sold his services to roughly 25 people so far.

• Spraying in multiple directions is a definite must for the best color and even coverage.
• Multiple applications is really important in my opinion, said Sanderson. We make two applications a week or two apart and so far don’t have to paint again until spring comes and the turf comes out of dormancy.
• Water volume is the most important thing that Cherokee Country Club has figured out over the years of turf paint applications on their warm season grasses.
• Sanderson prefers GreenLeaf nozzles made particularly for painting.

Sanderson noted these particular benefits for warm season grasses using Endurant organic turf paint during the winter months:

• Painting helps the soil temperature by at least a degree or two. We noticed we didn’t lose any grass on areas that were painted. Even when temperatures were especially low, we had less damage.

Sanderson shared the particulars of his property and how he uses the Endurant organic turf paint on his warm season grasses:

• Of the warm season grasses, the turf grass variety at Cherokee Country Club is bermuda grass.
• He paints all tees, fairways and the green surrounds at the country club and golf course, using Endurant.
• The property is located in north western Tennessee, totaling about 35 acres.
• Cherokee Country Club is located in Knoxville and has 18 holes.
• He’s been painting his tees there for about six years.
• He started using Endurant on the tees and decided to use Endurant organic grass paint on fairways after seeing the agronomic benefits.
• Cherokee Country Club prefers Endurant FW on the fairways at rate of 6 gallons per acre.
• Sanderson sprays the fairways two times, applying 3 gallons per acre in two directions, anywhere from a couple days apart to a week or two apart, depending upon the weather.
