Bear video at the Naples Zoo shared by videographer/ photographer Robb Stan via Facebook. This is one famous bear!

It started with a photograph of a black bear seated and eating at a picnic table that made the Today Show. Then, Southwest Florida Television decided to go back to Naples Zoo for a video of the picnic table bear during a morning meal from the handler! Everyone seems to enjoy the sight!

VIDEO Turf paint is easy: Painting dormant Bermuda Greens with Endurant colorant

It IS easy being green!

Memphis Country Club in Memphis, Tennessee painted their dormant Bermuda greens with Endurant turf colorant. They shared a video of their use of Endurant Turf Colorant on Bermuda greens and Zoysia grass tees over the course of a couple of months, giving the club’s turf a gorgeous green over winter and a smooth transition this spring.
You can really see how easy this is,” said Memphis Country Club Golf Course Superintendent Rodney Yingle as he recorded the process in December, January and February.

The colorant is uniform and the edges are easy to paint.

See for yourself!

Endurant turf paint: Being green IS easy on these dormant Bermuda greens

“It looks like a nice green, an overseeded green,” Yingle said.

The difference between using the colorant and overseed is that the Endurant saved the course money, reduced water demand and usage of other turf care products. That’s why the colorant is so strongly recommended by the USGA.

It’s not just about the looks either– it’s also better for the health of the soil and the turf.

The color retention was astounding during an extremely cold winter, said Yingle, who has chosen paint instead of overseed for about 20 years.
“This is why we like this paint. It blends out really well. It retains its darker color which is going to help us green up this spring,” he said of the Endurant.

The turf is healthier, keeping the soil temperature a little warmer.

“It’s friendly on our pumps more so than any paint we’ve tried,” Yingle said.
All the while, the course is choosing agronomy over aesthetics.

You could win Endurant! Check out our current wildlife photo contest on Facebook and Twitter. Tag Geoponics in a wildlife photo and check for new contests coming monthly.  Other prizes also available!

After the Masters: Golf courses compete for best turf quality

Men’s Journal captured the challenges faced by golf course superintendents everywhere as Masters Week 2014 comes to a close. Brace yourself for the expectations that your course looks and plays just like Augusta.  But maybe you don’t have that underground piping sucking out any extra water in the soil or an unlimited budget or a volunteer staff so happy just to be there and so huge they could make a small city.  We know.

Masters Week comes to a close and golf course superintendents are ready to hear the comparisons to their course conditions.
Masters Week comes to a close and golf course superintendents are ready to hear the comparisons to their course conditions.

Geoponics is a Naples-based company, so it was great to see the national magazine talk to a Naples, Fla., golf course superintendent in the article from writer Charlie Hanger.  The Men’s Journal article also features some interesting figures on how Augusta’s water management saves on chemicals– however it’s not light on fuel, according to the reporting.

In the mean time, what do you think? With a rise in rustic courses, do you think environmental care is trumping manicured (perhaps overly manicured) golf courses and landscapes in some cases?

Painting fairways is the way to go with new Endurant FW turf colorant from Geoponics. So green you can see it from the moon!

Instant natural green color saves money, time and water. Geoponics Endurant TC and Endurant TE have been wildly successful. Golf course superintendents asked for it and we answered with Endurant FW, new this year.

Endurant TC, turf colorant, is formulated for dormant grass. Endurant TE, paint with turf enhancer, is formulated for the health of actively growing grass. Now, Endurant FW, colorant for fairways, is– you guessed it– made specifically for use on fairways.

Agriox provides time released oxygen to anaerobic soil, quickly restoring soil and plant health

Agriox on approaches. A throwback Thursday photo collection of using Geoponics Agriox, which is an aerobic aeration conditioning product for soils and soil moisture providing critical life sustaining oxygen to microorganisms.

Agriox’s slow release of oxygen promotes overall soil health secondary to aerobic ecological sustainability in an environmentally proactive way. Superintendents have found year after year in their continued use of Agriox that the increase in soil oxygen allows for reduction of fertilizers, fungicides and pesticides due to increased plant sustainability making being environmentally friendly affordable. – See more at: https://www.geoponicscorp.com/soil-conditioners/agriox/#sthash.GJFvbSQ3.dpuf

Superintendent Magazine: Painting Fairways Trending in Golf Course Maintenance

Golf Course Superintendent Rob Vaughan of Brunswick Plantation Golf Resort kicked off a trend of painting fairways in Myrtle Beach three years ago, spurring others in the area to follow suit in recent years.

Now, three years later the trend is going national and international as told in Superintendent Magazine by writer Anthony Pioppi.

Turf Paint
www.TurfPaint.net

Since 2011, about nine other courses in the Myrtle Beach area have followed suit using turf colorant, particularly as an alternative to overseed.

The estimate is that in Florida nearly 30 courses are painting fairways, and the trend has spread to Arizona, Georgia and Alabama, as well as England, Italy and Australia– that list continues to grow quickly.

“We did it for turf health. We did it for economics,” says Vaughan, who has been bestowed the nickname “Dr. Paint,” of the course’s reason for abandoning overseeding.

Vaughan notes that by painting instead of growing ryegrass, he is saving $75,000 annually at the 27-hole course, and that includes the cost for painting, which averages about $15,000 a year.

Vaughan lauds the product effectiveness as does Jennifer Seevers, the turf colorants division manager at Naples, Fla.-based Geoponics Earth Chemistries, which supplies Vaughan with his colorants.

Greener Pastures: Golf Course Superintendents save time and money painting fairways with Endurant Turf Colorant

Superintendent Magazine: Growing trend, painting fairways is saving golf course superintendents time and money, while being a more environmentally sustainable option.

Oh Christmas tree: Choosing a cut, fake or living tree

What is the best type of Christmas tree? There is no right answer, of course! However, here are some things to consider when choosing between a cut tree, an artificial tree and a living tree. Here are ways to factor in your space, budget and tastes, while also keeping the environment in mind when deciding whether to purchase a live, fake or cut tree.

cut tree Christmas recycle
A cut Christmas tree is great if you don’t have space to store a tree and you can recycle it after the holidays.

Cut tree

Pros:

1) Fragrant

2) Many sizes to fit your space

3) Many types, such as fir, spruce and pine

4) They can be recycled

Cons:

1) Some people are allergic

2) Pesticides and chemicals can be used to grow them

3) They can dry out easily causing a fire hazard

artificial_christmas_tree
Artificial Christmas trees may lead to less waste and be the economical choice.

Artificial Trees

Pros:

1) Can potentially be less expensive than purchasing a cut or live tree annually

2) Non allergy prone

3) No waste to deal with after the holidays

4) No worries about watering

Cons:

1) The manufacturing process can include chemicals and methods that can harm the environment

2) Can be expensive or difficult to find a realistic-looking tree

3) You need space to store the tree throughout the year

Live Christmas tree
A live Christmas tree can be the best environmental option if your landscape could use a tree.

Live trees

Pros:

1) Great way to add to your landscape if you were looking to add a tree

2) Can be the best environmental choice.

3) Fragrant

4) Several varieties are available, so it’s important to find one best for your climate

Cons:

1) They can be quite heavy with the roots and soil

2) Many can’t live indoors very long

3) Frozen dirt can pose a challenge for planting in some areas

4)  Some varieities may not look like the traditional Christmas tree shape
