This nesting box has been handcrafted to encourage a habitat for Red-bellied and Red-headed Woodpeckers. These birds are found throughout the Midwestern and Eastern United States. They are typically not considered a migratory bird, but are found nesting year after year in the same location. They are found actively in dry pine flatlands, mixed pine scrub, cypress swamps and other hardwood forests or scattering of trees. They provide a colorful display of movement in many urban areas as well from tree to tree or at feeders. Nesting is diverse, with their common breeding time in the spring to late summer with usually 4-7 eggs. As many as 2 broods have been raised by the same pair in one year. Their diet consists of small insects, small fruits, acorns and a variety of other grains.
